About Ray Moore
Raymond Leroy "Farmer" Moore (1926-1995), a Maryland tobacco farmer whose nickname came straight from the family fields he worked his whole life, was spotted by Dodgers scout Rex Bowen while playing Army ball in Manila and signed with Brooklyn ahead of the 1947 season. Hard-throwing but wild, he debuted in 1952, then blossomed after an October 1954 trade to his home-state Orioles, winning 10, 12, and 11 games from 1955-57. In June 1957 he threw one of four consecutive Orioles shutouts that tied an American League record, and that season he ranked among the AL's top ten in innings (227 1/3) and strikeouts (117). This card shows him in his final Baltimore season - that December he was traded to Chicago, where he pitched for the 1959 "Go-Go" White Sox pennant winners and appeared in the World Series. Teammates also called the coon-hunting Moore "Old Blue" after his favorite hound. He retired in 1963 at 63-59 with 46 saves.
