Gus Triandos - 1957 Topps #156
1957 Topps #156 Gus Triandos

About Gus Triandos
Gus Triandos (1930-2013), a burly 6-foot-3 catcher, was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1948 and reached the majors briefly with them in 1953. Buried behind Yogi Berra, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles, where under manager Paul Richards he became the everyday catcher and one of the American League's premier power-hitting backstops. In 1958 he belted 30 home runs, tying Berra's AL single-season record for catchers, and caught Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter, the first in Orioles history. Six years later, with the Phillies, he handled Jim Bunning's 1964 perfect game, making him the first catcher to catch no-hitters in both leagues. A four-time All-Star, he earned the nickname 'Tremendous Triandos' during his 1953 season with the Birmingham Barons for his massive frame. Famously slow-footed, he stole just one base in his career. He finished with 167 homers and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1981. This is his second Topps card as an Oriole.
