Mike Fornieles - 1957 Topps #116
1957 Topps #116 Mike Fornieles

About Mike Fornieles
Havana-born José Miguel Fornieles y Torres was a grocery clerk playing Cuban amateur ball when famed Washington Senators scout Joe Cambria signed him in 1950. His September 2, 1952 big-league debut was historic: a 5-0 one-hit shutout of the Philadelphia A's, matching a 20th-century debut record set by Addie Joss in 1902. Dealt to the White Sox for Chuck Stobbs, then to Baltimore in a six-player deal in May 1956, the right-hander went 4-7 as an Oriole — and on June 14, 1957, the same season this card appeared, Baltimore traded him to Boston for Billy Goodman. As the Red Sox's ace reliever he peaked in 1960, leading the AL with 14 saves, setting a league record with 70 relief appearances, winning the inaugural Sporting News AL Fireman of the Year Award, and earning the win in Ted Williams' final game. A 1961 All-Star, he finished 63-64 with 55 saves, plus back-to-back Caribbean Series titles with Cuba's Marianao club in 1957-58.
