1957 Topps #236 Joe Ginsberg

About Joe Ginsberg
Myron Nathan Ginsberg carried the nickname "Joe" his whole life — adopted as an infant, he was called "Little Joe" after his father Joe, and the name stuck. Signed off Detroit's sandlots by Tigers scout Wish Egan in 1944 out of Cooley High School, he debuted with Detroit in September 1948 after Army service in the Philippines. A backup catcher across 13 big-league seasons (1948-1962), he caught the first of Virgil Trucks' two 1952 no-hitters on May 15. Traded to Baltimore in August 1956 for Hal Smith, he hit just .071 down the stretch, then — wearing eyeglasses at manager Paul Richards' urging — rebounded to .274 in 85 games in 1957, his best Orioles season, right when this card appeared. He later wrestled Hoyt Wilhelm's knuckleball behind the plate and started the original Mets' 1962 home opener. He finished at .241 with 20 homers in 695 games.
