About Foster Castleman
Foster Ephraim Castleman (1931–2020), a Nashville native, signed with the New York Giants as a shortstop in 1949 after farm director Carl Hubbell discovered him. Navy service in 1951–52 interrupted his rise, but he debuted on August 4, 1954, and as a rookie reserve collected a $4,000 share of the Giants' World Series championship money. His finest season came in 1956, when he started 97 games at third base and hit 14 home runs, tied for third on the club. This 1957 Topps card captures his final Giants season; the following March New York sold him to Baltimore for $30,000, and he platooned at shortstop with Willy Miranda despite three knee operations, quipping that 'shortstop is hard enough with two good knees, let alone two bad ones.' Across 268 games he batted .205 with 20 homers, later working in menswear sales and Cincinnati real estate — and fell just short of the service time needed for a baseball pension.
