Joe Margoneri - 1957 Topps #191
1957 Topps #191 Joe Margoneri

About Joe Margoneri
Joseph Emanuel Margoneri, a left-handed pitcher born January 13, 1930, in Somerset, Pennsylvania, signed with the New York Giants in 1950. His path to the majors was interrupted by Army service at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio from 1952 to 1953. Before reaching the big leagues, he authored a memorable feat in winter ball: pitching a complete game in the closing contest of the 1955 Caribbean Series, he handed the champion Santurce Cangrejeros their only defeat, 7-2, against a lineup featuring future Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays. Margoneri debuted for the Giants on April 25, 1956, going 6-6 with a 3.93 ERA as a rotation starter. In 1957 he worked almost exclusively as a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen, making his final appearance on June 3. Over two seasons he compiled a 7-7 record and 4.29 ERA in 36 games. This 1957 Topps card is his lone Topps issue and rookie card.
