1957 Topps #154 Red Schoendienst
Uncorrected error: Hit .253 in '47, not .223. It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Red Schoendienst
Albert Fred "Red" Schoendienst, nicknamed for his red hair, was a switch-hitting second baseman who reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1945 after signing off a 1942 open tryout. A slick fielder and steady bat, he made 10 All-Star teams and won the 1950 All-Star Game for the National League with a 14th-inning home run at Comiskey Park. He anchored second base on the 1946 Cardinals' World Series champions, then was traded to the New York Giants in June 1956 and to the Milwaukee Braves in 1957, where he helped win the pennant and World Series over the Yankees. Diagnosed with tuberculosis after 1958, he underwent lung surgery and returned to play, finishing with 2,449 hits and a .289 average over 19 seasons. He later managed the Cardinals to the 1967 World Series title and back-to-back pennants, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989. This 1957 Topps card, picturing him as a Giant, carries an uncorrected error: it lists his 1947 average as .223 rather than the correct .253.
