About Hank Sauer
Henry John "Hank" Sauer (1917-2001) was a slugging left fielder signed out of the Pittsburgh sandlots by the Yankees in 1937. After a monster 1947 minor-league season (.336, 50 homers, Minor League Player of the Year), he broke through with the Cincinnati Reds, then found his home with the Chicago Cubs after a mid-1949 trade. Cubs fans in the left-field "Sauer section" tossed him chewing tobacco as a sign of affection, and he became "the Mayor of Wrigley Field." A two-time All-Star (1950, 1952), Sauer won the 1952 National League MVP despite the fifth-place Cubs, leading the majors with 121 RBIs and tying Ralph Kiner for the home-run title at 37, edging out Robin Roberts. He hit 288 career home runs with 876 RBIs. By 1957, this Topps card, Sauer had joined the New York Giants, closing out his career as the team moved to San Francisco.
