About Ruben Gomez
Rubén Gómez (1927–2004), a right-hander from Arroyo, Puerto Rico, starred for the Santurce Crabbers from 1947 before signing with the New York Giants in February 1953. He went 13–11 as a rookie, then 17–9 with a 2.88 ERA in 1954 and beat Cleveland 6–2 in Game 3 of the World Series sweep — the first Puerto Rican pitcher to start and win a Series game. Owner of a screwball Bill James and Rob Neyer ranked among the ten best, he pitched for the Giants (1953–58), Phillies (1959–60, 1967), Indians, and Twins (1962), going 76–86 with 677 strikeouts; on April 15, 1958, he shut out the Dodgers 8–0 in the first major-league game on the West Coast. Puerto Rican teammates dubbed him "El Divino Loco" ("the Divine Madman") for his wild driving and refusal to be intimidated on the mound. A record 174-win Winter League career put him in the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball Hall of Fame's inaugural 1991 class; this card shows him in the Giants' final New York season.
