1957 Topps #105 Johnny Antonelli

About Johnny Antonelli
Baseball's most famous "bonus baby," Johnny Antonelli signed with the Boston Braves in June 1948 for a reported $52,000 — the biggest bonus in the game's history to that point, a sum that so irked staff ace Johnny Sain that he threatened to walk out. After two Army years, the Rochester lefty went to the New York Giants in the February 1954 trade that sent 1951 hero Bobby Thomson to Milwaukee, and he promptly delivered: 21-7 with a league-best 2.30 ERA and six shutouts, third in MVP voting, a Game 2 World Series win over Early Wynn, and the Game 4 save that finished the sweep of Cleveland. A six-time All-Star, he won 20 games in 1956 and 19 in 1959, retiring at 126-110 in February 1962 rather than join the expansion Mets. This card shows the Giants' ace during the franchise's final New York season; back home he built a 28-store Rochester tire business. He died in 2020 at age 89.
