About Daryl Spencer
Daryl Spencer signed with the New York Giants' organization in 1949 after a 23-homer season in the Sooner State League and debuted on September 17, 1952. A power-hitting infielder, he lost 1954-55 to military service — missing the Giants' 1954 World Series championship — then returned to the Giants' lineup in 1956. This card captures his final season at the Polo Grounds: when the franchise opened 1958 in San Francisco, Spencer hit the first major-league home run on the West Coast, connecting off Don Drysdale in an 8-0 win at Seals Stadium on April 15. He later played for the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Reds, retiring with 105 homers and a .244 average in 1,098 games. In Japan with the Hankyu Braves (1964-1972), the 6-foot-2 slugger added 152 home runs, earned the nickname "The Monster" for his size and power, and jolted Japanese baseball with his hard takeout slides. He died in his native Wichita, Kansas, in 2017.
