1957 Topps #50 Herb Score

About Herb Score
The hardest-throwing left-hander of his era, Herb Score was signed by Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka — the man who discovered Bob Feller — for a $60,000 bonus on his 19th birthday in 1952. After a 22-5, 330-strikeout season at Indianapolis earned him The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award in 1954, he won 1955 AL Rookie of the Year honors, going 16-10 with a 2.85 ERA and 245 strikeouts, a rookie record that stood until 1984. An All-Star in both 1955 and 1956, he went 20-9 with a 2.53 ERA and a league-best 263 strikeouts in his second year. This card caught the phenom hailed as a "left-handed Bob Feller" at his peak: on May 7, 1957, Gil McDougald's line drive struck Score in the right eye, and after a 1958 elbow injury and a 1960 trade to the White Sox he finished 55-46 with 837 strikeouts. Score then spent 34 years as Cleveland's beloved broadcaster, calling his final game in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.
