About Bob Lemon

Bob Lemon signed with Cleveland at 17 for $100 a month, debuted in September 1941 as a third baseman, and only became a pitcher in 1946, when reports of his Navy-team pitching during World War II convinced manager Lou Boudreau to move him to the mound. The conversion produced a Hall of Famer: seven 20-win seasons (1948-50, 1952-54, 1956), seven straight All-Star selections (1948-54), and a 207-128, 3.23-ERA career spent entirely with the Indians. In 1948 he no-hit Detroit 2-0 on June 30, then won two World Series games with a 1.65 ERA as Cleveland took its first title since 1920; his 23-7 season anchored the 111-win 1954 pennant winners. “Lem” also slugged 37 career home runs, among the most ever by a pitcher. He later managed the 1978 Yankees to a World Series championship after taking over midseason. Cleveland retired his No. 21 in 1998; Cooperstown called in 1976. This card catches the veteran ace fresh off his final 20-win campaign.
