About Jim Hegan
James Edward Hegan (1920-1984) was a defensive standout catcher who spent 14 of his 17 major-league seasons with the Cleveland Indians. Signed by Cleveland in 1938, he debuted in 1941 and, after military service in World War II, became the Indians' starting catcher for 11 straight seasons (1946-1956). A five-time All-Star (1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952), Hegan was a light hitter (career .228 average, 92 home runs) but one of the finest defensive backstops of his era, retiring with a .990 fielding percentage. Manager Lou Boudreau handed him pitch-calling duties, and Hegan guided a staff that led the American League in ERA repeatedly, catching three no-hitters: Don Black (1947), Bob Lemon (1948), and Bob Feller (1951). He was the everyday catcher on Cleveland's 1948 World Series championship team. Hegan later closed his career with the Tigers, Phillies, Giants, and Cubs, then coached for nearly two decades. He was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 1966.
