About Preston Ward

A rangy 6-foot-4 first baseman from Columbia, Missouri, Preston Ward signed into the Brooklyn Dodgers' farm system in 1944 at age 16 and debuted with Brooklyn on April 20, 1948. After military service during the Korean War cost him the 1951 and 1952 seasons, he landed in Pittsburgh on June 4, 1953, in the blockbuster that sent Ralph Kiner to the Cubs — then closed that season with a walk-off two-run homer into the Forbes Field bleachers for the Pirates' 50th win. Traded to Cleveland during 1956, Ward mans first base here in his only full season as an Indian; in June 1958 he was packaged with a young Roger Maris in the deal that brought Vic Power and Woodie Held to the Tribe. Over nine big-league seasons he hit .253 with 522 hits and 50 home runs, batting .284 across Cleveland and Kansas City in 1958.
