About Harry Simpson
Harry Leon "Suitcase" Simpson earned his nickname in the Negro Leagues, where a sportswriter matched his size-13 feet to Suitcase Simpson, a big-footed character in the Toonerville Folks comic strip — not, as often assumed, from his frequent trades. Signed away from the Philadelphia Stars (1946-48) after a four-for-four, two-homer tryout sold Cleveland GM Hank Greenberg, the outfielder-first baseman debuted in 1951 and played eight seasons for the Indians, Athletics, Yankees, White Sox and Pirates, batting .266 with 73 home runs and 381 RBI. His peak came in Kansas City: a 1956 All-Star, he hit .293 with 21 homers, 105 RBI and an AL-best 11 triples, then led the league in triples again in 1957. Casey Stengel called him the best defensive right fielder in the American League. This card pictures him just before the June 15, 1957 swap that sent Billy Martin to Kansas City and Simpson to New York, where he started four World Series games at first base as the Yankees fell to Milwaukee in seven.
