About Clete Boyer
Clete Boyer, the slick-fielding middle brother of baseball's Boyer clan, signed with the Kansas City Athletics for a $35,000 bonus in May 1955 — the "bonus baby" rule kept the teenager on the big-league roster for two years. This 1957 Topps card, his Topps rookie card, pictures him as an Athletic in the very season Kansas City dealt him to the Yankees in a June 1957 thirteen-player trade. From 1959 to 1966 he was New York's acrobatic third baseman, appearing in five straight World Series (1960-64) and dazzling in the 1961 Series with diving stops from his knees. In Game 7 in 1964 he homered off Bob Gibson while brother Ken connected for St. Louis — the first brothers to homer in the same World Series game. Traded to Atlanta, he hit a career-high 26 home runs in 1967 and won a 1969 Gold Glove, making the Boyers the first brothers each to win one. He retired with 162 home runs, then hit 71 more for Japan's Taiyō Whales (1972-75).
