About Tom Morgan
Tom "Plowboy" Morgan — nicknamed for the farming he did in his native El Monte, California — signed with the New York Yankees before the 1949 season and went 9-3 as a rookie in 1951. He pitched in three World Series for New York (1951, 1955, 1956), winning rings in 1951 and 1956. On February 19, 1957, the Yankees shipped him to Kansas City in the 13-player blockbuster that brought Bobby Shantz and Art Ditmar to the Bronx, so this card captures Morgan's lone Athletics season — a 9-7 record and 4.64 ERA across 46 games. He later pitched for Detroit, Washington, and the expansion Los Angeles Angels, logging a 2.36 ERA in 59 games in 1961, and retired 67-47 with a 3.61 ERA and 64 saves. As pitching coach for the Angels, Padres, and Yankees, he mentored a young Nolan Ryan, who credited Morgan with refining his mechanics, and later helped Tommy John rediscover his delivery. Morgan died in Anaheim in 1987.
