Eddie Robinson - 1957 Topps #238
1957 Topps #238 Eddie Robinson

About Eddie Robinson
Eddie Robinson signed into pro ball with Knoxville in 1939 for a $300 bonus and debuted with Cleveland in 1942, then lost three seasons to Navy service in World War II, where a botched leg operation nearly ended his career. The left-handed-hitting first baseman started for the Indians' 1948 World Series champions, batting .300 in the Series, and made four All-Star teams (1949, 1951-53). His best year came with the 1951 White Sox: 29 homers and 117 RBI, both third in the American League. Ted Williams called him "the most underrated and best clutch hitter I ever played against." This card catches Robinson's farewell tour — he split his final 1957 season among Detroit, Cleveland, and Baltimore. He finished with 172 home runs and 723 RBI, later served as general manager of the Braves and Rangers, and died in 2021 at age 100 as baseball's oldest living former major leaguer.
