Uncorrected error: Born in '30, not '31 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Frank Lary
Frank Strong Lary (April 10, 1930 - December 13, 2017) was a right-handed pitcher born in Northport, Alabama. He starred at the University of Alabama, reaching the 1950 College World Series before signing with the Detroit Tigers organization. After a brief 1954 debut, he anchored the Tigers' rotation through 1964, a durable workhorse who led the American League with 21 wins in 1956 while also topping the league in games started and innings pitched. His finest season came in 1961, when he went 23-9 and won a Gold Glove; he was an All-Star in both 1960 and 1961. Lary earned the nickname "Yankee Killer" for his dominance over the powerhouse New York Yankees, against whom he compiled a lifetime record of roughly 28-13. Teammates also called him "Taters," after a 1955 road trip when he wrote the word for potatoes on a dining-car order. He finished 128-116 with a 3.49 ERA over stints with Detroit, the Mets, Braves, and White Sox. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
