About Ray Boone

Ray Boone signed with Cleveland as a catcher in 1942, spent World War II in the Navy, then debuted with the 1948 World Series champion Indians and eventually succeeded player-manager Lou Boudreau at shortstop. Traded to Detroit in June 1953, he shifted to third base and erupted, batting .312 with 22 homers for the Tigers and tying a big-league record with four grand slams that season. An All-Star in 1954 and 1956, he tied Jackie Jensen for the 1955 AL RBI crown with 116, and Casey Stengel called him the best clutch hitter his Yankees faced all season. This card lists him at third, but calcium deposits in his knees pushed him across the diamond to first base in 1957. Boone retired with 151 home runs, scouted more than 30 years for Boston — signing Curt Schilling — and became patriarch of baseball's first three-generation family: son Bob and grandsons Bret and Aaron all followed him to the majors.
