About Chuck Stobbs

A three-sport All-State star at Norfolk's Granby High School, Chuck Stobbs signed with the Boston Red Sox in May 1947 as one of baseball's original bonus babies, taking a reported $50,000 at age 17 and debuting that September as the majors' youngest player. The lefthander pitched 15 seasons for the Red Sox (1947-51), White Sox (1952), Senators (1953-60, with a brief 1958 stop in St. Louis), and Twins (1961), going 107-130 for mostly second-division clubs. His name is fixed in baseball lore as the man who served up Mickey Mantle's April 17, 1953 blast out of Griffith Stadium, estimated at 565 feet and celebrated as the first tape-measure home run of the live-ball era. This card followed his career-best 1956 (15-15, 3.32 ERA), but 1957 turned cruel: an 8-20 record and a league-leading 20 losses for the last-place Senators. He later coached and broadcast Senators games, and died in 2008.
