About Bob Wiesler
Bob Wiesler, a St. Louis lefty signed by the Yankees out of Beaumont High School in 1949, was one of the minors' most overpowering arms, winning three straight league strikeout titles — 240 at Independence in 1949, 277 at Joplin in 1950, and 162 for Kansas City in 1951. He debuted for New York that August at age 20, lost the 1952 season to Army service, and resurfaced in 1954-55 before the Yankees packaged him with Whitey Herzog, Lou Berberet, Herb Plews, and Dick Tettelbach in the 1956 trade that brought back Mickey McDermott and Bobby Kline. Wildness — 218 walks in 241⅓ big-league innings — pinned him to a 7-19, 5.74 career line, and he went 3-12 for the 1956 Senators, though he capped 1957 with a seven-hit, one-run complete game against Baltimore. Depicted here in his final Washington years, he later worked for Anheuser-Busch back home in St. Louis.
