Bob Buhl - 1957 Topps #127
1957 Topps #127 Bob Buhl

About Bob Buhl
Robert Ray "Bob" Buhl (August 12, 1928 - February 16, 2001), a Saginaw, Michigan native, was a right-handed starting pitcher. Originally signed by the Chicago White Sox, he was declared a free agent by Commissioner Happy Chandler over a signing that violated high-school-eligibility rules, then joined the Braves organization; he served as an Army paratrooper (1951-52) before debuting for the Milwaukee Braves in 1953. As the third starter behind Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette, Buhl anchored the 1957 pennant winners, going 18-7 with a league-leading .720 winning percentage and a 2.74 ERA, then helped the Braves defeat the Yankees in the World Series. He earned the nickname "Dodger Killer" for dominating Brooklyn, including beating them in five consecutive starts in 1956. His lone All-Star selection came in 1960. Buhl finished 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA over 15 seasons with the Braves, Cubs (1962-66), and Phillies. Notoriously inept at bat, he went 0-for-70 in 1962, a major-league record. He was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
