About Felix Mantilla
Felix Mantilla (1934-2025), born in Isabela, Puerto Rico, signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1952 after starring for Puerto Rico's 1951 Amateur World Series champions. He reached the majors with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and spent six seasons there as a versatile infielder, sharing shortstop and second base and rooming with Hank Aaron. Nicknamed "Felix the Cat" for his agility and quick reflexes, he played on the 1957 world champions, appearing in four World Series games and standing on the field for the final out in Game Seven. He also played in the 1958 Series, and in 1959 his single broke up Harvey Haddix's 12-inning perfect game bid. Traded to the expansion New York Mets in 1962 and then Boston, he broke out with the Red Sox in 1964 (.289, 30 HR) and earned his lone All-Star selection in 1965, closing his 11-year career at .261 with 89 home runs. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie issue.
