1957 Topps #193 Del Rice

About Del Rice
Delbert "Del" Rice Jr. (1922-1983) was a defense-first catcher whose glove and pitch-calling sustained a 17-season major-league career from 1945 to 1961. Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1941, he debuted in 1945 and, as a rookie the following autumn, helped the 1946 Cardinals win the World Series over the Boston Red Sox, catching all three of Harry Brecheen's victories. Rice caught for the Cardinals through 1955, when he was dealt to the Milwaukee Braves. There he became pitcher Bob Buhl's personal catcher; Buhl went 18-8 with a 2.74 ERA in 1957 as Milwaukee won the National League pennant and beat the New York Yankees for the World Series crown, Rice's second title. A reserve on this 1957 card, he started two Series games that October. Named an All-Star in 1953, Rice retired with 1,309 games, a .237 average, 79 home runs and 441 RBIs, then managed the California Angels in 1972.
