About Jerry Coleman
Gerald Francis "Jerry" Coleman (1924-2014) was signed by Yankees scout Joe Devine in 1942 and reached the majors in 1949, when the Associated Press named him American League Rookie of the Year. The slick-fielding second baseman spent his entire nine-year career (1949-1957) with the New York Yankees, earning an All-Star selection in 1950 and winning the Babe Ruth Award as 1950 World Series MVP after batting .287 with clutch RBIs. He played on six pennant-winning Yankee clubs and multiple World Series champions, finishing with a .263 average; Casey Stengel called him the best he ever saw turning the double play. Nicknamed "The Colonel" for his rank as a Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant colonel, Coleman was the only major leaguer to see combat in two wars, flying 57 missions in World War II and 63 in Korea and earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He later broadcast the Padres for decades and won the Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award in 2005.
