About Whitey Ford
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford grew up in Astoria, Queens, and signed with the hometown Yankees for a $7,000 bonus after scout Paul Krichell won a bidding war with the Red Sox and Giants. The blond left-hander — Lefty Gomez started calling him "Blondie" and "Whitey" in the minors, and the name stuck after his 9-1 rookie season of 1950 — became the winningest pitcher in Yankees history: 236-106, a .690 percentage that remains the best of any post-1900 pitcher with 200 wins, and a 2.75 ERA. A ten-time All-Star, he won six World Series and set Series records with 10 wins and 33⅔ consecutive scoreless innings, breaking Babe Ruth's mark in 1961, the year he went 25-4 to claim the Cy Young Award and World Series MVP. Catcher Elston Howard dubbed him "Chairman of the Board" for his calm command. In 1957, the year of this card, shoulder soreness limited him to 129⅓ innings, yet he went 11-5 with a 2.57 ERA. He entered Cooperstown in 1974 alongside Mickey Mantle.
