1957 Topps #24 Bill Mazeroski
Bill Mazeroski's rookie card — the Pirates' defensive wizard at second base and 1960 World Series walk-off hero.

About Bill Mazeroski
William Stanley “Maz” Mazeroski — the nickname a simple box-score shortening of his surname — signed with Pittsburgh out of West Virginia in 1954, and Branch Rickey converted the teenage shortstop to second base after watching him turn a few pivots. He debuted July 7, 1956, and spent all 17 seasons (1956–72) as the Pirates' second baseman, earning 10 All-Star selections, eight Gold Gloves, and a major-league-record 1,706 double plays at the position. On October 13, 1960, with Game 7 against the Yankees tied 9–9 in the bottom of the ninth, he drove a Ralph Terry pitch over Forbes Field's left-field wall — still the only walk-off home run ever to end a World Series Game 7. A 1971 champion as well, he retired with 2,016 hits and 138 homers, entered Cooperstown via the Veterans Committee in 2001 declaring “defense belongs in the Hall of Fame,” and died February 20, 2026, at 89. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie card — one of the set's nine key rookies.
