Bob Friend - 1957 Topps #150
1957 Topps #150 Bob Friend

About Bob Friend
Robert Bartmess "Bob" Friend (1930-2019) was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950 and, after a no-hitter in his final minor-league start at Waco, debuted in the majors in 1951. Nicknamed "The Warrior" - a tag he carried from his days as a high-school football tailback that stuck once he began logging heavy innings - Friend spent 1951-1965 with the Pirates before finishing 1966 with the Yankees and Mets. In 1955 he became the first pitcher to win a league ERA title (2.83) while toiling for a last-place club, and in 1958 he tied Warren Spahn for the NL lead with 22 wins. A workhorse who never spent a single day on the disabled list in 16 seasons, the three-time All-Star anchored the 1960 World Series champions with an 18-12 record, though he struggled in the Series itself. He retired with 197 wins, a 3.58 ERA, 1,734 strikeouts and 3,611 innings, long holding Pirates franchise records for innings and strikeouts.
