1957 Topps #209 Bob Skinner

About Bob Skinner
Bob Skinner signed with the Pirates in 1951 and hit .472 in 29 games at Class D Mayfield, then spent two years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War before debuting at first base in 1954. This card catches his breakout: moved to left field by Danny Murtaugh in 1957, the La Jolla native hit .305 with 13 homers and was hailed as the National League's most improved player. He batted .321 in 1958, led NL outfielders with 17 assists, and made three All-Star teams (1958 plus both 1960 games). In the 1960 World Series he jammed his thumb sliding in Game 1, missed the next five games, then returned to drop a key sacrifice bunt in Pittsburgh's 10-9 Game 7 win. A .277 hitter with 1,198 hits, he went 2-for-3 pinch-hitting for the champion 1964 Cardinals, managed the Phillies and Padres, and won a third ring as the 1979 Pirates' hitting coach. He died in May 2026 at 94.
