1957 Topps #199 Vern Law

About Vern Law
Vernon Sanders "Deacon" Law was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Signed by the Pirates as an amateur in 1948, he debuted in 1950, pitched in 1951, then missed 1952-1953 serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before returning to anchor the staff through 1967. A devout member of the Mormon Church who was ordained a deacon as a boy and an elder as a teenager, he earned the nickname "Deacon" from teammates for his religious devotion, and he refused to throw at batters. His signature 1960 season carried Pittsburgh to the World Series title: he went 20-8, won the National League Cy Young Award (the first Pirate to do so, outpolling Warren Spahn), and made both All-Star teams. In the Series he won Games 1 and 4 and started Game 7, pitching on an ankle he had sprained during the pennant celebration. Law finished 162-147 with a 3.77 ERA and 1,092 strikeouts.
