1957 Topps #76 Roberto Clemente

also known as Bob Clemente
Pittsburgh Pirates · National League · Series 1 (#1-88) · outfield
★ Hall of FameKey cardErrorUER

Roberto Clemente's second Topps card. The back refers to him as 'Bob' — a name the proud Puerto Rican star famously disliked.

Uncorrected error: Referred to as "Bob", which he hated It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente turned pro at 18 with Puerto Rico's Santurce Cangrejeros in 1952, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954, and was plucked by Pittsburgh with the first pick of that November's Rule 5 draft. From 1955 through 1972 he patrolled right field for the Pirates, winning four batting titles, 12 consecutive Gold Gloves (1961-72), the 1966 NL MVP, and 15 All-Star selections. He hit safely in all seven games of the 1960 World Series triumph, then batted .414 with two home runs to earn 1971 Series MVP as Pittsburgh won again. His 3,000th hit — a double off Jon Matlack on September 30, 1972, in his final regular-season at-bat — capped a .317 career. Broadcaster Bob Prince dubbed him "The Great One." This second-year Topps card calls him "Bob," a name Clemente rejected as disrespectful to his Puerto Rican heritage. After he died December 31, 1972, in a plane crash carrying earthquake relief to Nicaragua, the Hall of Fame held a special 1973 election, making him its first Latin American inductee.
