About Jimmy Piersall

Jimmy Piersall signed with the Red Sox and broke into pro ball at Scranton of the Eastern League in 1948, debuting in Boston in 1950 and patrolling the outfield there through 1958 in a 17-season career that later took him to Cleveland, Washington, the Mets, and the Angels. A two-time All-Star (1954, 1956) and two-time Gold Glover (1958, 1961), he was called the best defensive right fielder ever by Casey Stengel and led the AL with 40 doubles in 1956. His 1952 nervous breakdown and recovery from bipolar disorder became the best-selling memoir Fear Strikes Out, filmed with Anthony Perkins in 1957 — the very year this card hit packs, as Piersall posted career highs of 19 homers and 103 runs. He famously ran the bases backwards after his 100th home run in 1963, finished at .272 with 104 homers, and later broadcast for the White Sox alongside Harry Caray.
