1957 Topps #202 Dick Gernert

About Dick Gernert
Richard Edward Gernert (September 28, 1928 - November 30, 2017) was a right-handed first baseman born in Reading, Pennsylvania. A standout for the Gregg Post American Legion team that won the 1944 Pennsylvania State Championship, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1950 and debuted on April 16, 1952. As a rookie he hit 19 home runs with 67 RBIs, then added 21 homers in 1953 and 20 in 1958. His best average, .291, came in 1956 after he recovered from hepatitis. Over 11 seasons with the Red Sox, Cubs, Tigers, Reds, and Houston Colt .45s he batted .254 with 103 home runs and 402 RBIs. As a reserve on the 1961 pennant-winning Cincinnati Reds he reached the World Series, which the Yankees won in five games. On November 21, 1959, Boston traded Gernert to the Cubs in baseball's first interleague trade without waivers. He later coached and scouted for decades. This card appears in the scarcer high-number fifth series of the 1957 Topps set.
