1957 Topps #217 Gene Stephens

About Gene Stephens
Glen Eugene Stephens (1933-2019) turned down a $3,000 offer from Yankees scout Tom Greenwade to sign with the Boston Red Sox, hitting .337 with 22 home runs as an 18-year-old at Class D High Point-Thomasville before debuting in Boston in 1952 at age 19. On June 18, 1953, the lanky left fielder became the first modern-era major leaguer with three hits in one inning — a double and two singles off three Detroit pitchers during Boston's record 17-run seventh in a 23-3 rout of the Tigers. Dubbed Ted Williams' "caddy" for his years as the superstar's late-inning replacement — a tag he resented — Stephens hit .266 in 1957, batting .467 in August, and took home the Boston baseball writers' unsung hero award, the season behind this card. Traded to Baltimore for Willie Tasby in June 1960, he moved on to Kansas City and the White Sox, finishing in 1964 with a .240 average over 964 games.
