About Dave Sisler

The youngest son of Hall of Famer George Sisler and brother of big leaguer Dick, Dave Sisler took an unusual road to the majors: an academic scholarship to Princeton, where he pitched the Tigers to the 1951 College World Series before graduating magna cum laude in engineering. The Red Sox signed him for $40,000 in October 1952, and after two years of Army service he debuted in April 1956, going 9-8 and earning Boston writers' rookie-of-the-year honors. His 1957 Topps rookie card caught him at his peak — that spring he ran his career record against the Yankees to 4-0, briefly earning the tag "Yankee Killer" before a sore shoulder slowed him. Over seven seasons with Boston, Detroit, Washington, and Cincinnati he went 38-44 with 29 saves in 247 games, then spent three decades in finance, rising to vice chairman of A.G. Edwards.
