1957 Topps #112 Tom Brewer

About Tom Brewer
Thomas Austin Brewer (1931–2018) signed with the Boston Red Sox out of Elon College in April 1951 for a $6,000 bonus, went 19-3 in Class D, then gave two years to the Army before debuting at Fenway Park on April 18, 1954. The right-hander spent all eight of his big-league seasons (1954–61) in Boston, going 91-82 with a 4.00 ERA, 733 strikeouts, 75 complete games, and 13 shutouts, with double-digit wins seven years running. His 1957 Topps card caught him at his peak: in 1956 he'd gone 19-9 with a 3.50 ERA and four shutouts, made his lone All-Star team, and been denied a shot at 20 wins when his manager rested his arm; he followed with a 16-13, 15-complete-game 1957. Fast enough to pinch-run and a solid hitter, Brewer retired at 30 with shoulder trouble, then spent 25 years as a South Carolina probation officer and coached Cheraw High pitchers on a field later named for him.
