1957 Topps #163 Sammy White

About Sammy White
Sammy White was a standout two-sport athlete at the University of Washington, earning All-America honors in basketball and leading the Huskies to the 1948 NCAA tournament, before signing with the Pacific Coast League's Seattle Rainiers in 1949. Boston purchased his contract, and after a brief minor-league apprenticeship he debuted for the Red Sox on September 26, 1951. A right-handed catcher, White became Boston's regular backstop from 1952 to 1959, finishing third in 1952 Rookie of the Year voting and earning an American League All-Star selection in 1953. His best year came in 1954, when he hit .282 with 14 home runs and 75 RBIs. Prized more for his defense, he drew Casey Stengel's praise for framing pitches: "He steals more strikes from umpires than anyone else." In 1952 he hit a walk-off grand slam off Satchel Paige, then crawled home and kissed the plate. He later played for the Milwaukee Braves (1961) and Philadelphia Phillies (1962), retiring with a .262 average over 1,043 games.
