About Jack Meyer
John Robert "Jack" Meyer was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Born in Philadelphia on March 23, 1932, he turned down a $25,000 Yankees offer and signed with the Phillies in 1951 for $3,500, working his way up through the minors at Bradford, Wilmington, Schenectady, and Syracuse. He debuted on April 16, 1955, and had his finest season as a rookie, leading the National League with 16 saves and finishing second to Bill Virdon in Rookie of the Year voting. Used mostly in relief (178 of his 202 appearances), Meyer compiled a 24-34 record with 21 saves, 375 strikeouts, and a 3.92 ERA over seven seasons (1955-1961). Teammate Robin Roberts credited him with a blazing fastball and sharp curve, but injuries and his role in the Phillies' hard-partying "Dalton Gang" curtailed his promise. He retired after 1961 and died of a heart attack in March 1967, weeks short of his 35th birthday.
