About the 1957 Philadelphia Phillies

The 1957 Philadelphia Phillies went 77-77 under manager Mayo Smith, finishing fifth in the National League, 18 games behind the pennant-winning Milwaukee Braves. Playing at Connie Mack Stadium, the club leaned on center fielder Richie Ashburn, who hit .297 with 186 hits, and first baseman Ed Bouchee (.293, 17 home runs). The season's revelation was 28-year-old rookie Jack Sanford, who went 19-8 with a 3.08 ERA and a league-leading 188 strikeouts to win NL Rookie of the Year, while longtime ace Robin Roberts stumbled to 10-22. The year was also historic in Philadelphia: John Kennedy debuted on April 22, 1957, becoming the franchise's first Black player. Across the league, it was the final season before the Dodgers and Giants left New York for California — the Phillies, by contrast, stayed put in Philadelphia.
