About Richie Ashburn

Don Richard "Richie" Ashburn (1927–1997), a Tilden, Nebraska native, signed with the Phillies in 1945 and was converted from catcher to center field at Utica, where his blond hair earned the nickname "Whitey." As a 21-year-old rookie in 1948 he hit .333 as the NL's only rookie All-Star. On the 1950 season's final day his throw home cut down Brooklyn's Cal Abrams, preserving the tie Dick Sisler broke to clinch the Whiz Kids' pennant. A six-time All-Star, Ashburn won batting titles in 1955 (.338) and 1958 (.350, edging Willie Mays) — this card lands between those two crowns — and led NL outfielders in putouts nine times from 1949–58; Ted Williams dubbed him "Putt-Putt" for his speed. After the Cubs (1960–61) and the 40-120 expansion Mets, where he hit .306 as 1962 team MVP, he retired with 2,574 hits and a .308 average, broadcast Phillies games from 1963 until his death, and reached the Hall of Fame in 1995 after fans' "Why the Hall Not?" campaign.
