Robin Roberts - 1957 Topps #15
1957 Topps #15 Robin Roberts

About Robin Roberts
Robin Roberts signed with the Phillies for a $25,000 bonus in 1947 out of Michigan State, debuted in June 1948, and soon became the National League's premier right-hander. He won 20 or more games six straight years (1950-55), peaking at 28-7 in 1952, and led the NL in complete games five times (1952-56), at one stretch finishing 28 consecutive starts. On the 1950 season's final day he beat Brooklyn in 10 innings at Ebbets Field for his 20th win, clinching the Whiz Kids' pennant on Dick Sisler's three-run homer. A seven-time All-Star, Roberts went 286-245 with 2,357 strikeouts and 305 complete games for Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, and the Cubs, and later helped recruit Marvin Miller to lead the players' union. This card arrives on the heels of his fifth straight complete-games crown. In 1962 his No. 36 became the first number the Phillies retired; Cooperstown followed in 1976.
