1957 Topps #16 Walt Moryn

About Walt Moryn
Walter 'Moose' Moryn, a burly 6-foot-2 left-handed slugger from St. Paul, Minnesota, signed with Brooklyn in August 1947 after being spotted at a tryout camp and reached the Dodgers in 1954. Traded to the Cubs with Don Hoak in December 1955, he became a Wrigley Field favorite, serenaded with cries of 'C'mon Moooooooose!' He averaged about 20 homers a year in Chicago, and this card caught him entering his finest season — a career-best .289 with 19 home runs and 88 RBIs in 1957. A 1958 All-Star, he hit three home runs that Memorial Day against Los Angeles, winning the game with the last one off Sandy Koufax in the ninth. His defining moment came May 15, 1960, when his ankle-high shoestring catch of Joe Cunningham's ninth-inning liner sealed Don Cardwell's no-hitter. Moryn hit 101 home runs across eight seasons, later ran a tavern in Cicero, Illinois, and died in 1996.
