1957 Topps #235 Tom Poholsky

About Tom Poholsky
Tom Poholsky turned pro remarkably early, pitching for the Durham Bulls at age 15 during World War II before rising through the St. Louis Cardinals system. He peaked with Rochester in 1950, winning the International League MVP award and authoring one of minor-league baseball's great iron-man feats on August 13, 1950: a 22-inning complete game against Jersey City's Andy Tomasic, a 3-2 Rochester win in which he retired 18 straight batters from the 14th through the 20th inning. The 6-foot-3 right-hander pitched for the Cardinals in 1950-51 and 1954-56, then went to the Cubs on December 11, 1956 in an eight-player trade alongside Ray Katt and Jackie Collum, with Sam Jones headed to St. Louis. This card captures his lone Chicago season, which proved his last — his final big-league game came September 11, 1957. Poholsky finished 31-52 with a 3.93 ERA in 159 games, retired at 29 after a season with the Houston Buffs, and entered the Rochester Red Wings' hall of fame in 1990.
