Jim Brosnan - 1957 Topps #155
1957 Topps #155 Jim Brosnan

About Jim Brosnan
James Patrick Brosnan (1929-2014) was a right-handed relief pitcher who signed with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1946 and debuted in the majors in 1954. He pitched for the Cubs (1954-1958), St. Louis Cardinals (1958-1959), Cincinnati Reds (1959-1963), and Chicago White Sox (1963), appearing in 385 games and finishing 55-47 with a 3.54 ERA and 68 saves. Teammate Frank Robinson dubbed him "The Professor" for his bookish habits, glasses, and pipe. Brosnan enjoyed his best years in Cincinnati, posting a 2.36 ERA in 1960 and helping the Reds win the 1961 National League pennant with 16 saves; he pitched in the World Series, which the Reds lost to the Yankees in five games. He is best remembered as an author: his candid 1959 diary "The Long Season" and its sequel "Pennant Race" pioneered the honest insider baseball memoir that inspired Jim Bouton's "Ball Four." This 1957 Topps card captures Brosnan during his early Cubs tenure.
