Jim King - 1957 Topps #186
1957 Topps #186 Jim King

About Jim King
James Hubert King (1932-2015) was a left-handed-hitting, strong-armed right fielder from Elkins, Arkansas. Cardinals scout Fred Hawn signed the 17-year-old in 1950, and after years in the St. Louis farm system the Cubs took him in the 1954 Rule 5 draft. King reached the majors with Chicago, hitting 11 home runs in 1955 and 15 in 1956, when he led National League left fielders with nine assists despite a shoulder injury. This 1957 Topps card still pictures him as a Cub, though he had been dealt back to the Cardinals before the season and spent most of 1957 in the minors. His career revived after the expansion Washington Senators drafted him in December 1960; he stayed 6 1/2 years, longer than any other draftee, and belted a career-high 24 homers in 1963. Teammates dubbed him 'Sky King,' a pun on the old TV series poking fun at his dread of flying. He played 1,125 big-league games with 117 home runs.
