About Johnny Kucks
John Charles Kucks Jr. (1932-2013) was a right-handed pitcher born in Hoboken, New Jersey, who grew up in Jersey City. Signed by the New York Yankees in 1952 through scouts Paul Krichell and Frank O'Rourke, he starred at Norfolk in the Piedmont League before two years of military service. Kucks reached the majors in 1955 and enjoyed his finest season in 1956, going 18-9 with 12 complete games and three shutouts, earning an All-Star selection. That October he authored the defining moment of his career, throwing a three-hit, 9-0 complete-game shutout over the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series at Ebbets Field on October 10 - the last World Series game ever played in that ballpark - clinching the title for the Yankees. He won a second ring in 1958. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1959, Kucks left the majors in 1960 with a 54-56 record and 4.10 ERA. This 1957 Topps card followed directly on his World Series heroics.
