1957 Topps #34 Tom Sturdivant

About Tom Sturdivant
Tom Sturdivant's 1957 Topps card is his rookie card, and it caught him at his peak. Signed by Yankees scout Tom Greenwade in 1948 as an infielder, the Kansas-born right-hander converted to pitching during his Army hitch (1951–52) and debuted in New York on April 14, 1955. Nicknamed "Snake" for his sharp-breaking curveball, he broke out in 1956 at 16–8 with a 3.30 ERA, then won Game 4 of that fall's World Series over Brooklyn with a complete-game six-hitter that evened a Series the Yankees won in seven. In 1957 he went 16–6 with a 2.54 ERA, tying for the American League lead in winning percentage (.727). Arm trouble in 1958 derailed him; he drifted through six more clubs — the Athletics, Red Sox, Senators, Pirates, Tigers, and Mets — finishing 59–51 with a 3.74 ERA and 704 strikeouts, then ran a truck-leasing business in Oklahoma City, where he died in 2009 at 78.
