About Mickey Mantle
Named after catcher Mickey Cochrane by his father Mutt and signed off an Oklahoma sandlot by Yankees scout Tom Greenwade in 1949, Mantle became "the Commerce Comet" — a nickname pairing his hometown of Commerce, Oklahoma, with his blazing speed. Surviving teenage osteomyelitis that nearly cost him a leg, he patrolled center field in the Bronx from 1951 to 1968, winning three MVP awards (1956, 1957, 1962), making the All-Star team in all but two seasons, and claiming seven World Series titles while setting the Series career record of 18 home runs. His tape-measure blasts — including a 565-foot shot at Griffith Stadium in 1953 — became legend, and he retired with 536 homers and a .298 average despite knees wrecked by a drain-cover injury in the 1951 World Series. This card, the key to the 1957 set, follows his Triple Crown season (.353, 52 HR, 130 RBI) and carries the famous airbrushed "ghost Mantle" silhouette at its right edge. Cooperstown called on the first ballot in 1974.
